I'm married to a man who also should have been a pirate! Ed enjoyed 14 years in the Coast Guard, having trained at sea on the fabulous Eagle ... he has photos very similar to these with him up on the topmost mast bar, etc.
"What kind of parent doesn't teach their kid to swim?" The kind who don't know how themselves.
And I grew up on an island, don't forget!
